40 Years in the Making
Argentina vs England. The most loaded fixture in world football. Forty years after Maradona's Hand of God and the Goal of the Century at the 1986 World Cup, the two nations meet again in the semi-finals — this time with Lionel Messi carrying the weight of history for Argentina, and Jude Bellingham the hopes of a generation for England.
Argentina needed extra time to beat Switzerland 3-1 in the quarter-finals — Julián Álvarez scoring the decisive third in extra time after Breel Embolo was sent off. Messi, at 38, is playing perhaps the most emotionally significant football of his career: the reigning World Cup holders, fighting to reach a third consecutive final.
England came through Norway 2-1 in extra time. Bellingham was the difference — a driving run and thunderous finish that settled a match that looked to be heading for penalties. Gareth Southgate's side have been efficient, defensively solid, and have the experience of reaching at least the semi-finals in every major tournament since 2018.
Team Form & Key Players
Our Prediction
England at 1.77 are fair favourites — they have been the more consistent team across the tournament and haven't gone to extra time until the quarter-final. Argentina's legs are heavier, Messi is 38, and extra time vs Switzerland showed cracks when the press was applied.
But Argentina at 2.10 is where the value lies. Messi in a World Cup knockout match, at this stage, with this motivation, is not a team you bet against lightly. Álvarez is in the form of his career. England have a habit of the drama route.
Pick: Argentina to Win at 2.10 — the value is significant. Backing England to Win or Draw (Double Chance) at ~1.15 if you want safety.
